People, Places and Stories

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery

The treasures of Blackburn Museum’s collections are given a fresh twist in object-rich displays.

Symmetry and bold colours set the scene for one of Britain’s richest collections of religious icons, rare coins, illuminated manuscripts and Japanese prints. Vladamir Sherwood’s enormous painting ‘Laying the Foundation of the Cotton Exchange, 1863’ is displayed at eye-level to form a striking opening. A curved showcase provides the dynamic centrepiece to the Social History Gallery.

Sculpted characters by local artist Lucy Casson place Blackburn people at the centre of its stories.
