Mughal Splendour

Muraqqua’, Chester Beatty Library

Muraqqua’ at the Chester Beatty Library displayed the finest examples of Mughal painting during a period of immense artistic achievement.

The mood of Muraqqua’ was sumptuous, yet delicate, evoking courtly life in the Mughal Empire. Contrasts of scale drew attention to the exquisite decorative detailing of the objects. The colour palette – shades of rose, saffron, turquoise, parma violet and jade - was used with restraint and sensitivity.

Limpid graphic elements drew attention to portraiture, the proliferation and quality of gems, the superlative textiles at the Mughal Court.
