Chinese Artistic Achievement

Telling Images of China, Chester Beatty Library

Telling Images of China offered an unprecedented opportunity to view thirty-eight outstanding ‘story’ paintings from the Shanghai Museum, which holds one of the world’s finest collections of Chinese art.

The arrangement of the exhibition explored the folklore and stories that these fragile paintings explore, as well as the inventiveness and playfulness of the artists.

A bold yet subtle palette of reds, yellows and celadon made an overall contribution to the character of the exhibition. The design sought to evoke a sense of place and time and scenic graphics, layered with setwork, offered visitors a taste of China’s varied landscape.
