The Birth of Europe

The Book of Kells: Turning Darkness Into Light

The Book of Kells is one of the most beautiful illuminated manuscripts in the world. Written on vellum, it contains a Latin text of the four Gospels in insular majuscule script accompanied by magnificent and intricate whole pages of decoration.

The exhibition, Turning Darkness into Light, places the 9th century manuscript in its historical setting and enables the visitor to acquire a real appreciation of its beauty and significance.

Exquisite back-lit graphics and commissioned film reveal the process of creation and the intricacies of detailing.

The exhibition builds a sense of drama and anticipation prior to visitors entering the Treasury to encounter Ireland’s best-known national treasure.
