The Box is Highly Commended at the Museum + Heritage Awards

The Box has been highly commended under the Exhibition of the Year category at the 2021 Museum + Heritage Awards. The awards celebrate all things great in museum and heritage around the world. The 2021 awards saw a record number of entries, making competition tougher than usual. The Box, which we took from masterplan to completion, stood out in the crowd.

The Box is like Plymouth's very own treasure chest. Its collections span everything from social history to fine art, the natural world to naval memorabilia. Each gallery looks at the city from a different perspective. You can walk in the footsteps of Francis Drake and Scott of the Antarctic, learn about the prehistoric landscape or explore the West Country’s artistic legacy. Standout moments include an immersive port model, an abstracted model of the Mayflower ship and an installation of 1,200 portraits of descendants from the Mayflower’s famous voyage.
